Yuma bermudagrass
is an attractive turf-type variety that is well suited for areas
where a low growing, closely-knit turf is desired. Yuma's turf
performance exceeds that of common bermuda because of its vigorous
growth habit and greater concentration of leaves on each low
growing stem. These leaves attach to the stem at a 45-degree
angel compared to leaves of common and Tifway bermuda, which
grow almost parallel to the stem or stolon. This 45-degree angle
of growth holds the ball up for a more desirable lie and doesn't
allow the ball to bury into the turf. The dwarf growth habit
increased turf density, and dark green color make Yuma an exceptionally
attractive turf.
Yuma's ability to develop rhizomes within the first six weeks
and send them deep into the soil helps the plant escape cold
temperatures and works a larger soil profile for water and nutrients.
Testing of Yuma has shown an additional 30 days of growing season
is possible with proper irrigation and fertilization. Yuma has
shown that it will go into dormancy two weeks later and green
up two weeks earlier than other bermuda grasses. The earlier
spring green up is especially beneficial when transitioning
from ryegrass overseeded turf back to bermudagrass. |

& Maintenance: |
| Plant in
spring or summer when soil temperatures are consistently above
65º F (18º C) and no danger of frost is anticipated.
For best results, take a soil sample and follow recommendations
prior to planting, plant in full sun on well-drained soil in
temperate climates. Care must be taken not to cover the seed
with to much soil: no more than 1/4 inch (6 mm) covering the
seed is advised. After seeding, maintain soil moisture in the
root zone for at least 1 to 2 weeks. Under ideal conditions,
germination may begin within 7 to 10 days; allow 14 to 21 days
for full germination. Full coverage may be attained in 45 to
60 days. Recommended mowing height is 1/2 to 2 inches (12 to
50 mm). |
